Module 1 - Medical Terminology - Root Terms & Word Associations

Module Overview:

This module will present a comprehensive introduction and overview of medical terminology in a straightforward and easy manner for students who have no previous background in biology or medicine. Students will gain hands-on, practical experience working with word parts and medical terms related to each of the body systems. Students in this course will learn by doing. Every lesson reinforces the content through writing exercises and interaction with medical terminology. Through these interactive activities, students will gain the fundamental knowledge needed to be successful in one of the many fastest-growing fields in allied health.

Students will:

• Analyze the component parts of a medical term.
• List and define basic prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms.
• Use basic prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms to build medical terms.
• Explain common rules for proper medical term formation, pronunciation, and spelling.

Course Outline:

Lesson 1: Basic Word Structure

In this lesson, students will learn to divide medical terms into component parts. In addition, students will learn to analyze, pronounce, and spell medical terms using common combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes.
